MAOL/JD Dual-Degree Program

This collaborative program between St. Catherine University and Hamline University School of Law combines legal training and leadership development.

You take both legal and leadership courses, performing clinical legal work or a research thesis or action project. You also study accounting and finance, law and economics, international trade, organizational change and strategic management.

The MAOL, when coupled with the JD degree, positions you for a wide range of opportunites in today’s demanding and complex government, nonprofit and business environments. You can pursue the JD during the day or on weekends.

Academic plan

The dispute resolution concentration requires completion of 105 total credits — 79 credits at Hamline University School of Law and 29 in the MAOL program at St. Catherines. See below for a sample course plan.

Leadership core courses (15 credits):

  • ORLD 6200: Ethics and Leadership
  • ORLD 6400: Accounting and Finance Skills for Effective Decision Making OR a finance course at Hamline University School of Law
  • ORLD 7480: International Trade and the Global Economy OR Law and Economics (at Hamline)
  • ORLD 7500: Leading Organizational Change
  • ORLD 8200: Strategic Management

Required courses from Hamline University School of Law (35–36 credits):

  • Civil Procedure (6 credits)
  • Contracts (6 credits)
  • Legal Research/Writing (4 credits)
  • Torts I (3 credits)
  • Criminal Law (3 credits)
  • Constitutional Law (3 credits)
  • Property I (3 credits)
  • Professional Responsibility (2 credits)

  • Legal Perspectives (2–3 credits)

Choose one option below to fulfill clinical/research requirements:

  • Hamline Law Clinical
  • ORLD 8901: Research Proposal: Leadership Action Project AND ORLD 8980: Leadership Action Project
  • ORLD 8902: Research Proposal: Leadership Thesis AND ORLD 8990: Leadership Thesis

The following course is required:

  • ORLD 8880: Leadership Seminar

Elective requirements:

  • 43–44 addtional credits at Hamline University School of Law
  • 14 additional credits in the MAOL program
