Choosing healthcare: A tragic accident in his family inspired Antwoin to choose healthcare sales. He wanted to make a difference in people's lives and, if possible, save lives.
Real-world experience: After just one year of pursuing his healthcare sales certificate, he landed a job at Medtronic selling the company's fusion pump device for diabetics. He excelled. In his first year he was in the top 10 percent for their sales representatives.
Soon he joined Amerthox to sell a service to physicians for patient pain management.
He realized he needed more education and returned to St. Kate's to complete the Healthcare Sales Certificate program.
Why St. Kate's: "The things I've learned at St. Kate's go beyond what I learned in either of my two sales experiences," says Antwoin. He now knows that reps have a narrow focus on the company and product.
"St. Kate's offers a broader view of the healthcare industry," he says. "It's more invaluable than training at one pharma company. 'Introduction to Strategic Account Management' and other classes helped me learn how to build relationships, how customers and doctors think, and what the industry is all about."
Entrepreneurial Spirit: While continuing the certificate program, Antwoin and a partner launched an Internet-based service in July 2010, which offers physicians a cost-effective approach for marketing their practice. He says it is like Facebook for physicians. "The concept was developed over the past two years. Now we need to build our brand, which I'm learning to do at St. Kate's." His primary role is selling the service to physicians and advertisers of pharma or medical device companies.
Sales certificate advantages: "For entry-level people, this program allows you to be ahead of the curve. You'll learn concepts that others won't, such as selling into managed care. It's about building a solid foundation in the field. "
St. Kate's instructors and guest presenters are sales reps and sales managers who as provide a real-world perspective. That helps students build relationships in the industry and gain inside information from healthcare providers and companies. "You'll learn concepts that you can use in interviews that the average sales person doesn't know," Antwoin says.
