Vision - To be an innovative department renowned for rigorous, diverse programs of study steeped in the Catholic liberal arts tradition and distinguished by exemplary graduates responsibly engaged in the world.
Mission - Founded first on Catholic liberal arts tradition and offering rigorous programs of study, the Family, Consumer and Nutritional Sciences (FCNS) department educates women to be professional, ethical leaders. Grounded in science, the students become content experts with an innovative mindset and professional voice. The curriculum empowers students to understand and reflect upon the multi-faceted issues facing individuals and families today, challenging graduates to advocate for the dear neighbor without distinction in a socially responsible manner. Family and Consumer Science
As a family and consumer science major, you will be prepared for careers serving families and communities. With advanced study, you can work in areas such as consumer affairs, family therapy, human services, financial advising, parenting education and library science. Your course work will provide you with a broad base in all aspects of family and consumer science. Your choice of concentration within the major will provide the focus for your intended career.
Teaching licensure
If you choose to complete a major in family and consumer science with a grades 5–12 teaching licensure, you will be prepared to teach at the middle school and secondary level in areas such as:
- Family life
- Parenting
- Money management
- Consumerism
- Housing and interior design
As well as traditional areas of:
- Food
- Nutrition
- Clothing
Students completing the family and consumer science major and education course sequences meet the requirements for Minnesota licensure in Family and Consumer Science Education as prescribed by the Minnesota Department of Education.
