Family and Consumer Science
St. Kate's family and consumer science major prepares you for careers serving families and communities. You will gain a broad understanding of family and consumer sciences. It is a field that represents apparel design and construction, food and nutrition, consumerism, personal financial planning and family management.
Pick your focus
St. Kate's family and consumer science major combines courses from apparel design, fashion merchandising, foods and nutrition, and physical sciences. You may choose a concentration of three courses in a specific area of interest.
Possible concentrations include:
"We care about students on both a personal and professional level, and help them turn their interests into a paying job."
— Kelly Gage, assistant professor
- Early childhood family education
- Social work
Unique to St. Kate's
You'll learn to respect ethical and sustainable practices. Family and consumer science professors Trudy Landgren and Anupama Pasricha are speaking about sustainability in apparel design at conferences across the country. They are also winning awards for their innovation and leadership in this area.
If you're interested in teaching grades 5—12, you may complete additional courses in education and earn a licensure to teach family and consumer science. This path includes a teaching practicum at a local school. Alumna Sara Rose Schafhauser, for example, completed her student teaching at Centennial High School and Roseville Middle School in St. Paul.
We offer two courses on financial issues — "Financial Fitness" and "Personal and Family Financial Management." Topics addressed include consumer decision-making, home financing, employer benefit packages, estate planning and wills, identity theft, credit reports, stocks and mutual funds.
St. Kate's also has an award-winning money management program for students — among the first at an American university. It includes a "Money Doesn't Grow on Trees" speaker series, Peer Money Mentors and financial planners to help with budgeting and other money management issues.
Food science lab
St. Kate's has a modern food lab outfitted with a variety of cooktops and both gas and electric ovens. An overhead demonstration mirror gives you a clear view of a professor's food preparation or description.
