Be on the forefront of American Sign Language, Deaf Culture and interpreting at St. Kate’s. As an ASL or interpreting major, you will learn the art of interpreting spoken English into ASL and back again while working with professors who are worldwide leaders in their field.

Through courses, internships and service learning, you will gain an understanding of and appreciation for the culture of American Deaf people and increase your communicative competence in ASL. You will also study principles of translation, working from written texts and videos, to prepare you to communicate with people of all backgrounds.

St. Kate’s will prepare you to take national certification exams to provide interpreting services in the community. A St. Kate’s education is grounded in the liberal arts, giving you the broad background you need to work in a variety of fields, including education, healthcare and human services, government or theatre and the performing arts.

Three program options are available:

If you already have a degree but want to become an ASL interpreter, either major may be completed as a post-baccalaureate certificate. Both women and men may complete a post-baccalaureate major.
