TEACHING HIGHLIGHTS

A complete "Teaching Portfolio" is available on request.
1. RCP 100-200 Respiratory Care, various titles, (lecture).

This 5 course (16 semester hour) sequence has comprised the major component of my teaching load at CSC-Mpls since 1983. The courses are heavily content oriented, with special emphasis given to clinically relevant material. Including this year, I have had a significant role in developing over 150 Respiratory Therapist graduates.

2. PHI 200 Ethical Issues in Health Care - Internet Version.

I taught this 2 credit course for nurses and other allied health students three - four times/year, 1992-1999. PHI200 was a problem-based course in basic ethical theory and common principles for health care decision making - class size was between 15-20. Cases were used to illustrate situations commonly encountered. This course utilized web based materials, chatroom meeting, discussion group and structured assignments.

4. CyberScholars.

CyberScholars are a group of instructional designer/faculty in the allied health specialties that develop multimedia, web delivered (Authorware, streaming) continuing education for nursing, OTs, PTs, RTs etc. We currently have two units (2-4 contacts hours) up and on sale via secure credit card transaction. Two more are planned (funded) this spring.

3. IPS 290 Health Care Ethics and the Arts: Literature, Film and Diversity in Contemporary Decision Making.

This 2 credit hour course is being taught for the first time in Spring semester 1994. I am the primary developer and lead co-teacher in conjunction with Mark Nowak, MFA. It is a "text based" approach to teaching critical thinking and decision making and is designed to use literature and film (especially from non minority cultures) to give more intimate insight into ethical dilemmas.

5. "Inevitable Choices, Values in Health Care" - Minnesota Humanities Commission Grant

A series of 5 lecture/panel discussions (Sept. 1991-March 1992) supported by a grant from the Minnesota Humanities Commission, and assistance from Fairview and HealthEast. I created, wrote the grant and directed this project. I utilized various advisory panels to focus and expand the conceptual framework. One of the most productive sessions concerned multicultural issues in health care decision making. Another session that has fostered long lasting, continued interest concerned gender and judicial outcomes in end-of-life decisions.

OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS

1. Dissertation Research. "The Influence of Instructional Tactic Selection and Moderation Style on Participant Interaction and Exchange in Asynchronous Threaded Online Discussion."

2. Baccalaureate Degree in RC.
In conjunction with Paul LaMere -- proposed, managed and gained approval for baccalaureate major in RC at CSC (program was associate degree level) Baccalaureate implements 2004/05.

3. "Teaching Ethics" - Bush Collaboration Grant

Two grants(94/95,95/96) from the Bush Collaboration designed to gather Twin Cities college teachers with acute, long-term care and home care practitioners involved in health care ethics. Retreats and activities allowed us to discuss pedogological techniques and issues. I proposed and administered the grants. Retreats were held at Wilder Forest and involved 20 people.

2. Committee Work

A.    Current Member CSC Education Policy Committee and CSC Health Care Chairs

B.    Other CSC Committees:
Faculty Council, Ad.Hoc. Committee on Technology, Mission and Values Subcommittee, GE Web site Working Group, Allocation and Compensation, Promotion and Tenure, Mediation, Constitiution and Bylaws

C.    AARC Audit Committee member 1997

3. Program Accreditation

The Respiratory Care Program at College of St. Catherine has received full re-accreditation three times during my directorship. During this time, I was active in the JRCRTE to CoARC transition. Also important, RC program accreditation essentials were dramatically changed to an "outcome orientation," requiring a complete revision of program goals, curricula, and materials. Most recently the program was awarded full 10 CAAHEP re-accredition. (June 2003)

4. Important Transitions

A. The Minneapolis Campus was acquired in 1987 by the College of St. Catherine. I was Program Director throughout these transitions.
B. We have undergone two calendar transitions (quarters to semesters, integration of calendar to accommodate Campus Integrated Learning Modules) while I have been at the college.
C. As health care and private college enrollments have declined, I have led the RT program to adapt to the new financial realities, without sacrificing educational quality.
D. I was instrumental in the formulation of the new Respiratory Therapy accreditation system, while working as Minnesota Delegate to the American Association for Respiratory Care.
E. The Minnesota Center for Health Care Ethics, a center to study biomedical ethics combining philosophical, spiritual and cultural traditions, was created as result of my work on a grant. ("Inevitable Choices" conference, see above) The Center continues to be a collaborative effort of HealthEast, Fairview Foundation and College of Saint Catherine as was the conference.

5. Other

A. Faculty technology consultant/expert. I have initiated and assisted numerous technology projects around the college.
B. Developed & launched several major web sites (RT, PHI200X, OTA, GE)
