APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Applicants who are in the process of completing RESP Major prerequisites (during the current academic year) may be "contingently" accepted to the major -- on the condition that they complete any remaining prerequisite requirements before they start program courses.

The prerequisites to admission to the St. Kate's RC major are:

1. Undergraduate admission to St. Kate's.
(or to an ACTC college)
2. Completion of at least 30 credit hours.
(2.5 GPA overall)
3. Completion of prerequisite courses.
(Chemistry, Psychology, Sociology and Math or Statistics --
see transfer equivalence information above for specific course requirements
)
4. Acceptance to the St. Kate'sRespiratory Care Major.
5. Accepted students must also meet with the program chair and take the clinical tour.

PROGRAM MISSION

The mission of the St. Kate's Respiratory Care Baccalaureate Degree Major
is to prepare advanced-level (NBRC RRT level) respiratory care practitioners, who are competent, professionally committed, and are leaders in their community.

RESPIRATORY CARE OCCUPATIONAL INFORMATION.

Respiratory Therapists are members of an interdisciplinary healthcare team. They evaluate, treat, and manage patients of all ages with respiratory illnesses and other cardiopulmonary disorders in a wide variety of clinical settings (predominantly hospitals). In addition to performing diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care procedures, Respiratory Therapists promote cardiopulmonary wellness, disease prevention, and disease management; provide patient, family, and community education; participate in life support activities, and are involved in clinical decision-making (e.g., patient evaluation, treatment selection, and assessment of treatment efficacy).

ST KATE's RESPIRATORY CARE MAJOR INFORMATION.

Students who complete the RESP major at St. Kate's are prepared to:

- provide excellent, ethical patient care,
- assume leadership positions,
- promote the cardiopulmonary health of society,
- influence the quality of health care services in diverse practice settings,
- provide advanced level respiratory therapy practice -- eligible for RRT, through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC),
- become licensed as a MN-RCP through the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice.

The St. Kate's is one of the few colleges in the upper Midwest to offer a baccalaureate major in respiratory care. The 40-credit respiratory care baccalaureate major builds upon a broad foundation of coursework in the liberal arts and basic sciences and prepares students to provide comprehensive and holistic respiratory care to patients in clinical and community settings.

Students seeking the RESP major at St. Kate's receive individualized advising to facilitate their timely completion of professional, liberal arts, and science courses. The RESP curriculum is offered in six consecutive semesters and one summer session for day students. With almost 900 hours of clinical experiences in critical care, neonatal and pediatric intensive care, home care, pulmonary diagnostics, and rehabilitation, students are active participants in their learning experiences and work collaboratively with faculty to develop skills in critical thinking, clinical and ethical decision-making, and therapeutic and professional communication. Affiliated sites for directed clinical learning include: Fairview University Medical Center, Hennepin County Medical Center, Methodist Hospital, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, North Memorial Health Care, and Children's Hospital & Clinics.

The Respiratory Care Program at St. Kate's participates in the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (ACTC). Students who are enrolled at ACTC colleges may apply to the St Kate's RC program to enter the major.

The St Kate's Respiratory Care program is accredited as an advanced level respiratory care program by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC - http://www.coarc.com). The Higher Learning Commission - a member of the North Central Association (HLA/NCA - http://www.ncahlc.org), accredits St. Catherine University.

PROGRAM SUCCESS

St. Kate's Respiratory Care graduates pass the CRT exam (a legal requirement for all RCs) 100% of the time. When our graduates take the voluntary RRT (advanced respiratory care practitioner exams), our grads pass well above (+25%) national performance levels. Employers and graduates report they are satisfied with the advanced practice preparation provided by the St. Kate's Respiratory Care program. 100% of our graduates are employed, most within the Twin Cities Metro Area. We graduate 90%+ of those who enroll.

There are about 900 hours of clinical experience incorporated into the program curriculum. You will be linked up with a clinical mentor, who will increase your confidence and get you "ready to work" as a therapist. Clinical experiences for each student include extended time in adult, pediatric and neonatal critical care as well as specialty experiences in pulmonary function studies, home care, subacute and pulmonary rehabilitation.
